criminal reform scholarship

Statistically, 5% of the world’s population calls the U.S. its home. However, we have 25% of the world’s incarcerated population, or about 2.2 million people, behind bars. By contrast, in 1970, the U.S. jailed only 200,000 individuals.

Despite mass incarceration, not everyone charged with a crime goes to jail. The current criminal justice reform trend favors treatment over incarceration, especially for offenses like DUI or DWI and minor drug offenses.

The movement also tends to remove barriers to allow people to expunge their criminal records more easily. However, each state has a set of laws that differ from other states’ laws. The lack of uniformity makes lasting reform difficult.
